Ruffino was founded as early as 1877 in the Italian wine-growing region of Tuscany. At that time, the cousins Ilario and Leopoldo Ruffino joined forces to create the perfect winery. Very soon they achieved great success and their wine became known beyond the borders of Italy. Because the family lacked heirs, they decided in 1913 to sell the Ruffino winery to the Folonari family, who themselves had been producing wine for five generations. This marked the beginning of a new and modern era for Ruffino Winery. Today the Ruffino winery in Tuscany owns more than 1500 hectares of land with more than 600 hectares of vineyards.
The soil of the Ruffino vineyard consists mainly of clay and is rich in fossils. The climate is extremely mild with warm summers and not too cold winters. The variations in temperature between day and night favour the ripening process of the grapes.
At the Ruffino winery, the red Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon varieties are mainly planted.
