Due to the more favourable climatic conditions, Austria's wine-growing regions are mainly located in the east of the country in the provinces of Lower Austria, Burgenland, Styria and Vienna. There are 26 white and 14 red grape varieties permitted for wine production. The share of red wine has doubled in a short time and currently accounts for one third of Austria's total vineyard area. Zweigelt with about 14% and Grüner Veltliner with about 31% are at the top of Austria's wine production. Despite the diversity of Austrian wines, there is one unifying characteristic that clearly sets Austrian wine apart from the international range: The aromatic freshness despite complete physiological maturity. Nowhere else in the world do dense wines taste so light on their feet, nowhere else are fresh wines so compact. The diversity of the Austrian wine landscape is reflected in the variety of wine types.
