Latium

Lazio

Details

Lazio is a region characterized by lush green hills on one side and green plains and mountainous spaces on the other. Thanks to its conformation, this region is experiencing slow but steady growth in the area of wine production. Viticulture in Latium has very ancient origins, before the advent of the Romans. However, it was with the founding of Rome that there was an increase in vine cultivation and its related production. Among the predominant Latium vineyards are those characterized by white grapes such as: malvasia di Candia and Trebbiano Toscano. There is also the presence of indigenous Lazio vines such as grechetto, bellone and white bonvino, while as far as red grapes are concerned, ciliegiolo, merlot, cesanese, barbera and Montepulciano stand out. It is mainly the province of Rome, in particular the Castelli Romani area, that has an interesting wine production: two DOCG white wines stand out, such as Frascati Superiore and Cannellino di Frascati made through Malvasia di Candia grapes.
