It is certain that the origin of the name derives from a toponym: in fact, there is the locality Teroldeghe, in the municipality of Mezzolombardo, and the wine is mentioned in numerous notarial deeds as early as 1480. Recent DNA studies have shown that Teroldego is related to Lagrein, Marzemino and Syrah. The Teroldego vine, the most important black berry vine in Trentino, has found its particularly favourable habitat in the large flat area called Campo Rotaliano, a plain surrounded by the Dolomites where it finds unique conditions, particularly in the municipalities of Mezzacorona, Mezzolombardo and San Michele all'Adige. For some time now, its cultivation has also been extending to other areas, although, as Teroldego is a variety that is sensitive to soil and climate conditions, it seems to develop and give excellent results only in its area of origin.
